Almost nobody brings a car back because a door skin failed. They bring it back because the film crawled out of a bumper vent, or a door handle cavity opened up at one corner, or the licence plate recess tented in the middle three weeks after the job looked perfect. Recesses are where wraps get judged, and they are the one place where an install can be technically finished and already failing.
The reason is worth stating in physical terms rather than as a rule of thumb. A recess asks the film to travel further than the panel opening suggests, and every millimetre of that extra travel has to come from somewhere. If it comes from stretch, you have built a spring. Why film lifts out of a recess and not off a door
Four mechanisms do nearly all the damage, and they compound.
Stored tension. Vinyl stretched into a cavity behaves viscoelastically. It accepts the shape under heat, then spends the following weeks trying to return to flat through stress relaxation and creep. On a flat panel that tension has nowhere useful to go. In a recess it pulls directly against the weakest point, which is the inside corner.
Thinned adhesive. Stretch the face stock and the adhesive layer thins with it. A panel pulled twenty percent is not short of glue in one spot; it is short everywhere it was pulled, exactly where the load is highest. That is why overstretching and edge lift are the same failure described two ways.
Geometry the squeegee cannot reach. Adhesion needs contact pressure. Inside a deep vent or a handle pocket there is no angle from which a squeegee blade delivers pressure to the base of the wall. Film that was never pressed was never bonded, however good it looks.
Contamination that survived the wash. Recesses collect wax, polish residue, road film and tyre dressing overspray, and they are the last place anyone scrubs. Adhesive laid over that residue never touches the clearcoat at all.
Read the recess before you cut anything
Sort every cavity on the car into one of three categories, because the correct method follows from the category rather than from personal preference.
Shallow and open. Body line channels, shallow bonnet vents, licence plate wells with generous radii. Depth is small relative to the opening and the walls are gently angled. These can be stretched in.
Deep with reachable walls. Bumper intake vents, fog light surrounds, rear diffuser channels. A squeegee gets part of the way in but never cleanly to the base. These want an inlay or a relief cut.
Deep and enclosed. Door handle cavities, mirror bases, fuel filler pockets, sensor recesses. No pressure angle exists at the bottom. These want disassembly or a dedicated inlay piece with its own edges.
The decision test is quick and honest: press a dry offcut into the cavity with your thumb and watch whether it sits against the base under its own contact or bridges across the opening. If it bridges, stretching does not solve that. It hides it for a month.
The four methods, and when each is correct

The professional default for anything deep is the inlay. A planned seam tucked into a shadow line outlives an overstretched section every time, and it is invisible at two metres while a lifted vent is visible from across the street.
A workflow that holds
Get the panel off if you can. A bumper on the bench lets you wrap edges properly and terminate film behind the opening instead of on a visible face. Terminating on a face is what road spray and pressure washers attack first.
Decontaminate the cavity, not the panel. Wash, then work isopropyl alcohol into every wall and inside corner with a lint-free cloth wrapped over a plastic tool so the pressure actually reaches the base. Do this last, immediately before application, and do not touch the surface afterwards.
Confirm the panel is at working temperature. A cold substrate defeats everything that follows, for the reasons set out in our guide to the minimum temperature to install a car wrap.
Anchor first, then commit. Lock the film down on the flat surrounding surface before touching the recess. An unanchored sheet transmits every bit of tension you create in the cavity straight back out across the panel.
Work from the base outward, never inward. Warm the film gently, push it to the bottom of the recess with a soft tool, and let it lay from the base up the walls. Starting at the rim and pushing down drags the film thin at the point where it needs to be thickest.
Use as little stretch as the shape allows. Heat makes film pliable, not longer. If you are pulling hard, the recess is telling you that you chose the wrong method.
Post-heat every wall and every corner. This is the step that converts a shaped film into a bonded one, resetting the material's memory in its stretched position. Give it dwell time indoors. Pressure-sensitive adhesive keeps building strength for hours after application. A stressed recess driven straight out into cold air locks in a partial bond permanently.
Adhesive contact is the entire argument
Everything above serves one outcome: genuine wetting of the clearcoat at the base and corners of the cavity. A recess that looks perfect but was never pressed to the base has no bond there, and pressing it down later restores nothing, because the bond never formed. That section has to come off and be redone.
Two supporting points matter. Terminate inside the cavity wherever possible rather than on the rim, since an edge sitting in shadow sees far less mechanical attack. And keep terminations away from surface-energy problem areas, meaning any plastic trim that has been dressed or treated, which resists adhesion regardless of technique.
Film choice makes recesses easier or harder
Most installation advice skips this, and it decides how much margin you have.
Single-layer pigment films are the most forgiving. Stretch variation in the Crystal Series and the Ultra Matte Series does not change the colour visually, so a slightly thinned wall still reads as normal. Matte and satin finishes carry a second advantage, since they scatter light and hide the faint distortion a deep recess can leave behind.
Optically structured films punish stretch twice, mechanically and visually. Pulling a Metallic Series panel spreads its suspended flake and lightens the stretched area, so a vent surround can finish a visibly different shade from the bumper face around it. The same applies to Liquid Series and Rainbow Laser Series films, where uneven tension disturbs the effect itself, and to the angle-dependent Dual Color Dream Series. Textured film needs more heat to conform, which raises scorch risk in a confined space where the gun sits close to the surface. Treat 3D carbon fiber wrap recesses as inlay work by default, and see textured color change films for where texture belongs on a build.

Reading a lift after it happens
Corner lift with the film otherwise flat points to stored tension from overstretch. Lift along a whole wall means no contact pressure ever reached the base. Lift with a clean, shiny adhesive face when peeled means contamination. Lift that leaves adhesive residue on the paint means the bond formed and the film tore itself off under tension. Bubbling rather than lifting means trapped moisture or air with no release path.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my wrap keep lifting in bumper vents?
Because the film was stretched across the opening instead of laid into it, and because no squeegee pressure reached the base of the cavity. Both leave tension pulling on a bond that never fully formed. The fix is an inlay, not more heat.
Should I use relief cuts or an inlay?
Relief cuts release tension in tight corners where the walls are still reachable. An inlay becomes correct once the cavity is deep enough that one piece cannot reach the base without significant stretch. When in doubt, inlay, because a hidden seam is a smaller compromise than a thinned wall.
How much can I stretch wrap film safely?
Less than instinct suggests. Treat noticeable resistance as your limit rather than your starting point, and remember that adhesive thins along with the face stock. On specialty finishes the visual limit arrives before the mechanical one.
Do I need to remove the bumper to wrap it properly?
Not always, but it produces a better result. Off the car you can wrap edges, terminate film behind the opening rather than on a visible face, and clean recesses properly. On deep multi-vent bumpers it usually saves time overall.
Will post-heating alone stop a recess from lifting?
No. Post-heating sets the film's shape memory, which is essential, but it cannot create adhesive contact where none exists or remove tension built by overstretching. It is the final step of a correct method, never a rescue for the wrong one.
Does ceramic coating help recesses stay down?
